Five McCallie seniors are among the 15,000 students who advanced as National Merit Finalists for 2018 in the National Merit Scholarship Program for their outstanding scores on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Semifinalist Qualifying Test in 2017.
Boarding students Chase Gaume, Andrew Landsbergen and Gavin LaPlace along with day students Allen Liu and Ahmad Nisar were selected .
"These five students represent the outstanding level of scholarship that is a hallmark of this school and its academic curriculum," said Assistant Headmaster Kenny Sholl. "The hard work of guys like these combined with the efforts of an outstanding faculty make McCallie a truly exceptional school. We're grateful they and their parents chose McCallie."
As National Merit Finalists, Gaume, Landsbergen, LaPlace, Liu and Nisar have reached the final stage of the competition for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships in excess of $433 million.
Approximately 1.4 million high school juniors from more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the PSAT/NMSQT. Those students reaching the Finalist level make up less than one percent of all high school seniors in the United States.
