The varsity cross country team earned the team title Sept. 23 at the McCallie Invitational as all seven runners placed among the top 24.
The Blue Tornado won the varsity division with a team score of 52. Oak Ridge placed second with 65 points, and Montgomery Bell Academy was third with 84 points in the field of 15 teams from across the Southeast.
Junior Walton Bedell was the team’s top finisher, placing seventh on the 5k Moccasin Bend course in 16:41.41. Sophomore Samuel Ligon was eighth at 16:47.85.
Sophomore Duke Richey ran an 11th-place time of 17:01.10, and senior Chris Duncan crossed the line in 12th place at 17:06.28. Junior Dawson Carmack was 14th in 17:09.43, sophomore Dylan Zeller was 15th in 17:16.16 and sophomore John Arrowsmith turned in a time of 17:27.26 for 24th place.
The junior varsity squad was the runner up in the second division with 39 points, 13 points behind the leader Montgomery Bell Academy. McCallie’s top seven runners placed in the top 19 led by sophomore Jaren Dildine’s second-place finish. Sophomore Brown Hayes was right behind in third place.
Junior Raif Gork finished ninth, freshman Leo Muir was 12th, sophomore Reece Wearing was 13th, followed by junior Boniface Bizimana (16th) and junior Ben Manandhar (19th).
Next up for the runners: the junior varsity will compete at the Fast Break Invitational Oct. 5 at Heritage High School in Ringgold, Ga. The varsity will run in the Jesse Owens Invitational Oct. 7 in Oakville, Ala.
