McCallie Chapter of National Honor Society Inducts New Members

McCallie’s chapter of the National Honor Society inducted 71 rising seniors for the 2017-18 school year.

The National Honor Society is among the nation's best known organizations dedicated to recognizing outstanding high school students. Founded in 1921, NHS serves to recognize those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service and character. The McCallie chapter of NHS has been active since 1987.

McCallie inducts rising seniors into Keo-Kio

Keo-Kio, McCallie’s preeminent senior leadership organization, welcomed 12 new members from the Class of 2018, inviting juniors to join the group in a Chapel ceremony April 10, 2017.

The senior leadership organization honors students for their leadership, service and loyalty to the school and its abiding principles.

One of the school’s oldest organizations, Keo-Kio is instrumental in planning annual events such as the winter semi formal dance, Duck Day, community service projects and supporting new campus activities. The group also raises funds and distributes them to events and efforts made by other organizations at the school.

Senior Joshua Azan wins 2017 Walker Casey medal

On March 10, Headmaster Lee Burns ’87 presented the 2017 Walker Casey Award to senior Joshua Azan during Chapel.

The award is named in memory of Walker Casey '47 and is one of the most prestigious honors McCallie bestows to a senior student. Voted upon by the school’s faculty and student members of Keo-Kio, the Student Council and the Senate, the award recognizes the senior who most profoundly exhibits the strong Christian beliefs and standards exemplified by Mr. Casey.

“While there are other important awards at McCallie, the Walker Casey Award clearly speaks to the very soul of McCallie,” Burns said. “This award seeks to recognize strength of character and the power of positive influence.”

McCallie students sweep Black History Month Poetry Contest

Two Upper School and two Middle School students were recognized recently as the top winners in their divisions in the EPB Black History Month Poetry Contest.

The annual contest is open to students in grades 1-12, and EPB received 141 entries this year. McCallie students were four of eight students recognized in the contest.

In the Middle School division, poems by eighth-graders Jonas Mull and Alex Williams were chosen as the two winning poems. Jonas and Alex are students in Tammy Barber's English Class. Jonas wrote about World War II hero Doris Miller, a U.S. Navy cook who survived the attack on Pearl Harbor. Alex's "A Window into the Soul" was a broader look at the struggle to achieve Civil Rights.

Junior Ivan Yu Presents at Model UN World Health Organization Conference in DC

McCallie junior Ivan Yu, a boarding student from Shenyang, China, traveled to Washington, D.C., last week to present original research to a meeting of the Model United Nations World Health Organization at The George Washington University.

Yu was joined in the presentation by Dr. Robert Betz '70, a long-time health policy expert and an adjunct professor of health policy in GW's department of political science. Betz was contacted by McCallie economics teacher Skeeter Makepeace about Yu's research ideas, and Betz collaborated with Yu in developing the presentation for the Model UN.
