Gable, Cloud bring energy to new roles working with parents, alumni

As McCallie begins the 2017-18 school year, two current employees have moved into prominent roles working with parents and alumni to help enhance the McCallie experience for this special community. Dominique Gable will be the new Parent Programs Director while Amy Cloud becomes Alumni Relations Coordinator.

Daily Classes to Start Later Next Year

Even as summer begins with the excitement of vacations and trips to the pool, planning has already begun for the 2017-18 school year on the Ridge.

With an eye toward helping boys get more rest to improve school performance, McCallie will institute a  new weekly schedule for the 2017-18 school year, moving the start of academic classes to 8:55 a.m. every school day. This last year, classes began at 8:30 on four days a week and 8:55 on Wednesday mornings.

We are all looking forward to tomorrow and the opportunity to join the long blue line of impressive alumni. In addition to graduating from a fine institution like McCallie, there is another side benefit: post-graduation gifts.

No one can deny it, we all love pulling the intricate ribbon off a box and tearing open an envelope to see what treasures lie within. We will be excited to find monetary gifts, material goods perhaps in the form of college dorm necessities, and of course the intangible gifts… love and support for the future.

A Lucky Burden: Valedictory Address

I’ve recently come to terms with the following fact: Wesley and I have faces that, across all grounds and often from considerable distances, attract homeless people. What happened while Wesley and I were driving just outside of McCallie’s gates junior year laid the groundwork for the realization of this oddity. After an exhausting soccer practice that spring, we were craving some grease-covered “Famous Chicken n’ Biscuits” as we often do.

Ladybugs: Valedictory Address

I am deathly afraid of ladybugs.

Trust me that I am not making up this confession simply for shock value. Rather, it is truly a crippling fear of mine, something that freezes my blood cold and causes intense nervous sweating whenever I run across one of the cursed insects. I can quite easily trace the roots of this fear back about a decade ago to a horrifying week that my family and I spent in a mountain cabin one summer. The house in which we were staying was long overdue for a visit by the exterminator, and had therefore become the world’s premier breeding ground for the little red and black devils.
