A team state title, a national runner-up finish and several individual state titles highlighted McCallie’s spring sports season which wrapped up the last week of May.
The soccer program, which has gone 43-5-8 over the last three seasons under Head Coach Chris Cushenbery, captured the school’s first state soccer crown since 1999.
The Blue Tornado defeated Brentwood Academy 3-1 in overtime to advance to the state’s final four. At the TSSAA’s Spring Fling in the Murfreesboro area, McCallie’s state semifinal opponent was the 2016 state champions, Christian Brothers of Memphis. Senior Noah Cingilli snapped a scoreless tie with a rebound goal in the 48th minute which would stand for the 1-0 victory. The win set up a matchup with Montgomery Bell Academy which had eliminated McCallie from the state tournament each of the last four years.

Highlighted by a second-place finish for the boy’s varsity four, a bronze medal in the girl’s junior four, and a fifth-place finish in the boy’s junior four, the McCallie and GPS rowing squads turned in a historic performance at the Scholastic Rowing Association of America (SRAA) National Championships. The SRAA Nationals had over 179 teams compete in32 different categories. Teams came from as far away as California, Arizona, Florida, New York and Canada, as well as other states. Hakim McMorris won nine of 10 events May 23 and 24 to win the TSSAA Division II Decathlon State Championship at the Middle Tennessee State University track.
A junior boarding student from Santa Ana, Calif., Hakim collected a first-place point total of 6,892 points. The second-place competitor, Briarcrest's Daniel Tell, had 6,204 points.Read More
