McCallie's State champion soccer team

A team state title, a national runner-up finish and several individual state titles highlighted McCallie’s spring sports season which wrapped up the last week of May.

The soccer program, which has gone 43-5-8 over the last three seasons under Head Coach Chris Cushenbery, captured the school’s first state soccer crown since 1999.

The Blue Tornado defeated Brentwood Academy 3-1 in overtime to advance to the state’s final four. At the TSSAA’s Spring Fling in the Murfreesboro area, McCallie’s state semifinal opponent was the 2016 state champions, Christian Brothers of Memphis. Senior Noah Cingilli snapped a scoreless tie with a rebound goal in the 48th minute which would stand for the 1-0 victory. The win set up a matchup with Montgomery Bell Academy which had eliminated McCallie from the state tournament each of the last four years.

He turned to me and said, “Hal, it’s been this way ever since the day we graduated. It’s been like this for the last 50 years.”
