McCallie’s academic calendar for 2018-19 has been finalized, and it features a later starting date - Tuesday, August 21, 2018 - designed to reflect McCallie’s unique nature as both a day and a boarding school.
“Calendar math dictates that every five to seven years we must push the start of school to a later date in August," said Assistant Headmaster Kenny Sholl. "We have decided to make the shift for the 2018-19 school year. By starting later, we’re allowing our boys more time to enjoy summer with their families. For our boarding students in particular, this is vitally important and puts us more in line with other boarding schools across the country.”
As has been the case for a number of years, McCallie’s breaks will align with most of the independent schools in the Chattanooga area, including Girls Preparatory School, simplifying scheduling for parents with students in both schools.
Next year’s academic calendar includes final exams on Memorial Day - Monday, May 27, 2019. Students taking exams that day will begin their summer break at noon on Wednesday, May 29. However, students will have the option to reschedule Memorial Day exams for a make-up day on Thursday, May 30, if their families have traditions or trips planned over the Memorial Day weekend.
“Each year, we work hard to create an academic calendar and class schedule that reflect what’s best for our boys,” said Headmaster Lee Burns ‘87. “This calendar ensures that McCallie students get the maximum time in the classroom while meeting the needs of our families and ensuring a good balance of breaks during the school year.”
