Gordon L. Smith Jr. ‘43 passed away last week at the age of 91.
Smith was a longtime supporter of McCallie,serving as a trustee for several terms from 1968 to 2002. During that time, the chairman of the school’s Board of Trustees from 1998 to 2000, also serving as chairman of the building committee, which was appropriate since his father was one of the original architects of the campus.
Smith was honored in 1989 as a distinguished alumnus and was named a trustee emeritus in 2012.
“Gordon Smith’s legacy of service to McCallie has left an indelible mark on the school he so dearly loved,” said Headmaster Lee Burns. “His generosity with his time and his gifts have enhanced and will continue to enhance the lives of generations of McCallie men. He will be missed greatly, and the prayers of our school community are with his family at this difficult time.”
During his time at McCallie, Smith was captain and adjutant and played football, baseball, basketball, track, and boxing. He was honored with the Carter Trophy for Best Officer in his battalion. At McCallie he was in several clubs in leadership roles.Smith went on to attend Duke University on a Naval ROTC scholarship and a successful career in Chattanooga.
Smith is survived by his three children, including his sons Trip ‘72 and Preston ‘74, his five grandchildren, including grandson Skip ‘00, and seven great-grandchildren.
