The cross country team hosts the McCallie Invitational on Saturday at the Moccasin Bend course.
The Middle School boys races begin at 8:00 a.m. The Junior Varsity runs at 9:35 a.m., and the Varsity squad lines up at 10:45 a.m.
The Invitational is an annual event that draws teams from the area and several states. This year’s field includes nearly 20 teams in the high school division, including a team from Ohio and two from Alabama.
The Varsity and JV teams opened the season Sept. 16 at the Tennessee Classic at the Steeplechase course in Nashville. The Varsity placed second out of 32 teams in the gold division, the top level of competition. Senior Chris Duncan was the team’s top finisher followed by sophomores Dylan Zeller and Duke Richey, junior Dawson Carmack and sophomore Samuel Ligon.
“Last year at this meet, our No. 1 runner ran 17:44,” Head Coach Mike Wood said. “So this year, our top five all ran faster, and each of them improved nearly a minute from their 2016 race at the same meet.”
The junior varsity placed fourth out of 20 teams, but the results could have been better. The team’s top three runners were leading the pack, took a wrong turn and ended up running extra distance.
The race course is at 100 Moccasin Bend Road in Chattanooga, and there are plenty of viewing areas.
