Words of Wisdom from Miss Martha

Posted by Kenny Sholl on February 08, 2011

Men of McCallie,

We had the retirement celebration for Martha Hicks on Wednesday morning during the Faculty Meeting. In case you don’t recognize the name Martha Hicks, she is the Miss Martha who has managed the hot line at lunch for over 40 years. She always greeted us as "darlin'," "sweetheart," "honey," "sugar," and "baby" as she encouraged us to eat our vegetables and to play or coach hard in the game that night. She is a blessing and will be greatly missed.

She said something in her remarks to the faculty that bears repeating. And I quote:

"I was raised by five different, but loving, people. They were not able to give me the opportunity to get an education, because I was needed to work in the fields. What they did teach me was to treat every person, and I mean every person, no matter who they are, where they came from, or what they do, as I want to be treated. I have tried to do that every day of my life."

Miss Martha is a furtherer. She makes everyone feel a little better and special after coming in contact with her. Let’s commit to doing the same.

I know we have heard this said many times before, as it is a restatement of the Golden Rule, but hearing this wonderful lady say it with heartfelt passion really brought it home to me. Men, we all need to make this practice and way of life the cornerstone of our educational foundation.

Miss Martha is a furtherer. She makes everyone feel a little better and special after coming in contact with her. Let’s commit to doing the same.

I have never shared truer, simpler Words to the Wise with you.

Thank you, Miss Martha!
